Civic body proposes sanitation helpline, to tie-up with e-sampark

MC General House

The Municipal Corporation has proposed to start a helpline where residents can call to make complaints about garbage and construction waste lying at unauthorised places. The helpline will be connected to the online grievance redressal system of the civic body and a tie-up with e-sampark centres is also being looked into so that complaints given by residents at the centres are also transferred to the online redressal system.

A discussion on the issue of sanitation will be held at the meeting of the general house scheduled for January 29. Apart from setting up of the helpline, suggestions would be sought from councillors for finding a permanent solution to removal of garbage and construction waste.

The helpline number will be operational from 9 am to 5 pm. The operator will enter the complaint into the online grievance redressal system, which will give the complainant a complaint number, while the official concerned will receive an SMS about the grievance.

Municipal Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh said, "The UT Administration has been approached to have a tie-up with the e-sampark centres. People visit the centres with their complaints, some of which pertain to the Municipal Corporation. At present the written complaints are sent across to us. We are trying to have a tie-up with the sampark centres so that the complaints can directly be entered into the online grievance system."

The steps taken by the Municipal Corporation to deal with the problem of garbage and construction waste over the years have not been quite successful. Last year a pilot project was started to hand over door-to-door garbage collection to contractors. This would have ensured dumping of garbage from the doorstep to the Garbage Processing Plant. Due to intervention by political parties, there were protests following which the pilot project was scrapped. The issue of deteriorating standards of cleanliness has many times been taken up in the meeting of the House.
