Alliance Francaise de Chandigarh is staging Celimene et le Cardinal, a French play with English subtitles, written and directed by Jacques Rampal. Although a contemporary play, it takes off from where the classic The Misanthrope by Moliere ends. The Misanthrope was staged for the first time in 1666. It's the story of Alceste, a young man who hates all humanity, claims his hypocrisy, cowardice and compromise, yet loves the flirtatious and slanderous Celimene.
The play presented by Alliance is the rest of the story. It takes place 20 years after Misanthrope, where Molière's Misanthrope becomes a cardinal and returns to his lover, who is now happily married and a mother of four. He says that for months he's haunted by a nightmare and has come with a message of God, according to which Celimene is in great danger. This "confession" turns fast into a verbal match between an almost fundamentalist monk and a figurehead of the 17th century. Eventually love wins, because the lovers of Moliere still love each other.
The play will be staged on December 22 at 5 pm at Alliance Francaise, Sector 36, Chandigarh
Warm up to Winter
IT'S time to get adventurous under the sun as Anurag Sood, a professional mountain-climber, who runs Climb The Himalayas, is all set to beat the chill with sizzling outdoor activities as part of the Go Bananas winter camp. Starting December 25, the five-day camp is open to children above eight years and promises to get them in action. "Winter is the best time to get the young ones out in the open and we will get them to do adventure activities such as rock climbing, rope crossing, trekking, tent pitching and so on. The camp is designed to work as a team, get over inhibitions, initiate a love for physical activity and being outdoors," says Sood. For enquiries, contact www.gobananaskids.com.
