To make the process for inclusion of names in the electoral voter list "user-friendly", the Chief Electoral Office in Uttar Pradesh is going to start online registration this year.
Any person with a minimum age of 18 years as on January 1, 2011, may apply for inclusion of names in the electoral list and issuance of Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) from November 11 to 30. Manual applications could also be sent to officials.
The revised electoral list with new names will be published on January 5 and EPICs will be provided to the eligible voters at the booth level on January 25 — National Voters Day.
The Chief Electoral Office had introduced the online registration system in the state on a trial basis in 2009-10. During the trial, 5,000 online applications were received from Lucknow alone.
"We had received a good response during the trial last year. College students applied the most online. This year, online registration will take place in a full-fledged manner," said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Umesh Sinha.
The online registration facility will\ be available on the CEO's website http://ceouttarpradesh.nic.in/. Websites of all districts will be linked to the CEO's.
"The NGOs and private companies will also be provided the link if they ask for it via email. Heads of departments in universities and colleges are being requested to set up helpdesks on the campus and ensure that every eligible student is enrolled in the voter list," said Sinha.
To register online, a person will be have to fill a form available on the CEO's website and attach a scanned photograph, proof of age and residence. He will then take two printouts of the filled application form and attached documents. A signed copy of application form will be send to the CEO's office or his local voter registration centre. The other printout will remain with him. Evidence of age and address will be verified by booth level officers before publishing the revised voter list.
