Confident CM says Cong in self-destruct mode

On the last day of campaign for Moga bypoll, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal claimed the Congress was in a "self-destruct" mode, as it was the "only political outfit whose leaders actively worked to ensure the defeat of their own candidates".

"We would have won handsomely anyway on the development plank, but the tribal warfare within the Congress has meant that we would romp home with an unbelievable victory margin," Badal said on Thursday.

He also reiterated his charge that state Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh had issued a diktat to his MLAs not to approach the chief minister, his deputy, other ministers and even government officials for people's works.

"This is the way any democratic system functions. But Amarinder Singh probably still believes in princely lifestyle and treats his MLAs as courtiers who are not allowed to meet or mix with ministers and government officials. This is proving to be a handicap for the constituencies represented by the Congress. How can they represent the people if they do not get their due from the government schemes and policies?" he added.

Claiming that the SAD-BJP alliance was seeking mandate on the issue of development," Badal said: "This has gone straight to the hearts and minds of the electorate. The pace of development in Moga will pick up immediately after the model code of election conduct was over."
