Confused Team Anna takes note of Kejriwal call

While there is discomfort within Team Anna core committee over Arvind Kejriwal's signed article that appeared on Friday seeking suggestions from people on the course the movement should take, there is also a realisation on the need for a new direction. By afternoon, said Team Anna, they had received "500-600" e-mail suggestions on the address posted by Kejriwal.

"We have indeed reached a stage when we need to decide how to take the movement forward. We are not helpless, because we have the support of the people but we definitely want fresh ideas as to how to get what we want, an independent investigative machinery and an anti-corruption ombudsman free of government control," said senior lawyer Shanti Bhushan.

However, other members of the core committee felt that the differences of opinion among them were not so great as to warrant asking for suggestions from the people.

Prashant Bhushan conceded that the induction of tainted former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha in the BJP had also been a blow to Team Anna's focus on the Congress in its Lokpal campaign. A need is being felt to look at the overall stance of a party against corruption than just its Lokpal position.

"These will be discussed at the core committee meeting," Medha Patkar said, adding that she was not aware of any differences or helplessness within the team.

"We have seen that neither the government nor the opposition is serious about this. So we are wondering what effective steps to take to fulfil our commitment to the people," Shanti Bhushan said.

However, in another sign of the movement struggling to find its momentum, nobody seems uncertain of the next core committee meeting.

While Kiran Bedi had announced on Thursday that they would meet on January 7, Prasant Bhushan said today that Bedi "had not been aware that about 50 per cent of the core committee would not have been able to make it that day" and that the date was yet to be decided.
