Constable wearing earplugs comes under train, dies

A woman constable of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) died when hit by a train while she was crossing the railway track with earphone plugged into her ears in Aligarh on Sunday afternoon.

The police believe Mamata Rani (26) was listening to music and failed to hear the approaching train. No suicide note was found.

GRP Station Officer A K Gautam, ruling out any foul play, said Mamata's death occurred in an accident and that there were eye-witnesses to the incident. He said the earphones were still plugged into the victim's ears when they went to the spot.

Mamta, who was unmarried, was posted in Aligarh for the last one year. She stayed at the RPF camp office.

On Sunday, Mamata left for the railway station to make a reservation. The police suspect she took a short cut to reach the reservation counter when she was hit by the train. Her identity was ascertained from the identity card which was recovered from inside her bag.

Mamta's younger brother Manish said they could not say how the incident took place.
