Cops reward auto driver, guard for thwarting mall robbery attempt

On Independence Day, Noida Police honoured Mukesh Yadav, an auto driver, and Rajesh Kumar Mishra, a guard at Great India Place mall, who helped foil an armed robbery at the mall on August 6.

On Wednesday, as Noida SSP Praveen Kumar handed them certificates and a Rs 5,000 cash award at Vinayak Hospital, the dominant emotion for both was of relief at being alive.

Armed robbers had snatched Rs 15,000 from a Writer's Safeguard executive inside Great India Place (GIP) mall, located in Sector 18.

The robbers first shot at Mishra (45), constable Girvar Singh and Yadav (19). The auto driver rammed his vehicle into the robber's bike, causing two of them to fall off. They were arrested while the third fled.

The robbers had shot at Yadav, injuring him in the chest.

The security guard, Mishra, said, "The two could not aim properly because they were running. They shot at me from less than two metres. Fortunately, the bullet hit my arm. I am lucky to be alive."

The robbers were discharged from Kailash Hospital last week and taken into custody. Initially, the police heaped praise on the constable and announced a cash reward of Rs 5,000. The reward was later extended to Yadav and Mishra. "We visited the hospital on Wednesday because it was not possible for them to attend the Independence Day function at Police Lines. Along with the cash prize, we also presented them a police medal, a certificate and a gift hamper containing a watch, a pen and a diary," SSP Kumar said.

The mall has also announced that it will felicitate the Mishra and Yadav. "We are taking care of their medical needs at the moment but plan to give them a cash reward and a memento once they are discharged. We will organise a function to honour them. We hope it encourages others," said Ashish Sharma, General Manager (Operations), GIP mall.
