Cops shielding banned hookah parlours: PIL
Bombay High Court (HC) directed Thane commissioner K P Raghuvanshi on Monday to file a reply in a case alleging police support to hookah parlours despite a ban.
NGO Crusade Against Tobacco (CAT) has filed a PIL accusing Thane Police of shielding the owner of a hotel on Ghodbunder Road.
Vincent Nazareth of CAT said he saw at least 100 youngsters smoking at the hotel in September.
Justices A M Khanwilkar and Mridula Bhatkar directed Nazareth to file an affidavit and issued a notice to Raghuvanshi.
A circular banning hookah smoking in restaurants and hotels was issued by BMC on July 4, 2011.
HC upheld the ban saying "BMC imposing such conditions cannot be said to be without any authority".
