Cops who caught gangrape accused set to be rewarded for ‘good work’

The team of police officers who probed the December 16 gangrape incident are in line for a reward for their "exemplary performance". Though the police force had faced a lot of flak from various quarters after the 23-year-old paramedic student was tortured and gangraped on a moving chartered bus, senior police officers believe that the investigating team did "good work".
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said that rewards "will come" for police officers who had "probed the gangrape case" and caught the accused soon after the incident.
South Delhi police personnel caught the first of the six accused within 18 hours of the incident. In less than a week, all the accused, including a juvenile, had been apprehended.
Till now, the Delhi Police has spent 83 per cent of the funds meant for "cash rewards" to personnel as incentives for boosting their confidence.
"The Delhi Police kept a fund of Rs 66 crore for 2012-2013 for giving rewards to personnel doing 'good work'. Of this, Rs 50 crore has been distributed among policemen," Kumar said.
Cash rewards used to be categorised as a separate fund, till a few years ago. "However, most grants for this purpose now come under 'special security' fund and 'other charges', which may also be used for miscellaneous tasks such as purchasing buffer vehicles, etc. As for cash rewards, it varies in different districts and departments. Some districts may not give rewards at all," a senior officer told Newsline.
Elaborating on the need and importance of such incentives, the officer said the reward sum is important for constable and sub-inspector rank personnel, who fall under "low salary" grades. "The salary of constables and sub-inspectors is not too high. Even a small sum means a lot to them. All middle-class people know that even a little extra money helps in managing the monthly expenses," the officer said.
