CRPF man in whom Naxals planted IED cremated in Allahabad

The body of 29-year-old CRPF constable Babulal Patel, in whom the Maoists had surgically inserted an improvised explosives device after killing him at Latehar in Jharkhand, reached his native place in Allahabad's Malak Balau village on Friday afternoon and was cremated later in the evening.

A large crowd, including people from adjoining villages, were present when the body reached the village, which is around 20 km from the district headquarters.

Sub-divisional magistrate Vivek Srivastava said the body was brought to Allahabad by CRPF officials by air and then taken to his house by road.

Patel is survived by his aged father Munni Lal, mother Jagpati Devi and wife Rekha. Patel also had five sisters, all married. He had married Rekha around nine months ago and she is pregnant.

His brother-in-law Ram Karan said Patel had last visited home in December on 10 days' leave and went back on December 25.

Patel joined the force in 2006 and was posted in Jharkhand. On Wednesday, the security officials found the body of Patel, who was killed in an encounter in Latehar four days back. The body was taken to a hospital in Ranchi where doctors noticed stitches on the abdomen and moved the body to an isolation ward.

Doctors found that the abdomen had been cut open and sutured again. Later, it was found that the Maoists had placed a 2-kg improvised explosive device, fitted with gelatin sticks, detonator and battery, packed in a plastic container, inside Patel's stomach after removing vital organs like intestines and spleen. The CRPF's bomb disposal defused the IED.
