A day after he was booked for rape, the head of a non-government organisation allegedly took his life by jumping from his fourth-floor apartment in Vasant Kunj, South Delhi.
Police said neighbours found Dr Khurshid Anwar lying in a pool of blood around 10.30 am on Wednesday. According to a senior police officer, no suicide note has been recovered so far.
Anwar was the executive director of the Institute for Social Democracy for the past 10 years. The NGO website also lists him as one of the three core-committee members. The 55-year-old had been named in a rape FIR, registered at the Vasant Kunj (North) police station on the basis of a complaint forwarded to the police by the National Commission for Women (NCW).
The complainant used to work at an NGO called Boond and had met Anwar during the course of protests staged against the Muzaffarnagar riots, police said.
The woman in her complaint has alleged that Anwar raped her on September 12 this year during a dinner party organised at his house in Block B, Vasant Kunj.
According to police, Anwar had invited the heads of NGO Boond — Mayank Saxena and Eila Joshi — to the party. The woman claimed that she too was invited to the party and had gone to Anwar's house along with the two.
The complainant alleged that at the party, Anwar spiked her drink and assaulted her after she passed out.
The woman allegedly told police that she did not register a complaint immediately after the incident as a few of her friends stopped her from doing so.
The incident was, however, brought to the attention of the NCW by some of her friends, police said.
At the behest of NCW, the woman's statement was recorded in the presence of activist Madhu Kishwar.
