Delhi gangrape re-run: Bus driver, six accused of rape in Punjab

In a case similar to the gangrape of a paramedic student in New Delhi, a 29-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped on Friday by seven persons, including the driver and conductor of a private bus, who lured her on board with the promise of dropping her at her Ghukla village in Punjab's Gurdaspur.

Instead, driver Daler Singh and conductor Ravi drove the woman back to somewhere near Gurdaspur and then "to some unknown place on a motorcycle where she was gangraped", SSP Gurdaspur Raj Jeet Singh told reporters on Saturday.

The victim, a mother of two, alleged that her requests to conductor Ravi to ask the driver to stop the bus went unheeded. They took her to some place near Gurdaspur, where five of their friends joined them and gangraped her in a house, the SSP said.

The next morning, the driver dumped her near her village. She first went home and then came to the police station to lodge a complaint, the SSP said.

He said six of the seven accused had been arrested Daler Singh, Ravi, Jaswinder Singh, Jagpreet Singh and Satwant Singh and Gora while one unidentified person is absconding.

A case of rape has been registered against the accused, Singh said, adding that during the preliminary interrogation, the accused have confessed to their crime.

Asked why the victim had not resisted when she was being taken on motorcycle, the SSP said she was "a bit mentally weak".
