Demolition man all set to visit Dhanas marble market on December 27

According to officials, these structures have come up on the agricultural land at Dhanas village and as per the Periphery Control Act, agricultural land cannot be used for any business purpose

The second biggest marble market of the northern region located in the city may soon lose its ground with the Land Acquisition Office all set to raze these "illegal" structures on December 27. The market has mushroomed in violation of the Periphery Control Act.

The market which boasts over 250 dealers, including the marble dealers and a few scrap dealers, will have to look for an alternative place now.

According to officials, these structures have come up on the agricultural land at Dhanas village and as per the Periphery Control Act, agricultural land cannot be used for any business purpose.

Significantly, prior to this place, this marble market was located on the government land in Raipur Khurd.

Officials say valid chances of hearings had been given to each dealer individually as per the procedure and only after going through the entire process, the decision had been taken to carry out the demolition drive.

The decision comes in the wake of the UT Administrator's directive to check the unregulated growth around the city in its peripheral areas.

Says Land Acquisition Officer Tilak Raj, "We have told the dealers about the drive and only after following due procedure, the decision has been taken by the competent authority to clear the land of the illegal structures."

The marble market is the second largest market after Delhi's marble market and caters to the entire northern region, including Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Recently, 20 illegal warehouses were removed which had come up near Daria village in violation of the Periphery Control Act. Some of the demolished structures had come up in the last few months, indicating a lack of supervision on the part of the field staff to check the unregulated growth on the agricultural land.
