Six days after Rajesh Kumar (42), a Dera Bassi-based property dealer was beaten to death by some unknown persons, the Mohali Police claim to have solved the case on Wednesday with the arrest of BJP mandal president Rakesh Mehta and his three associates. One of the accused is an engineering student.
SSP Mohali Gurpeet Singh Bhullar told Newsline that police was working on several theories to solve the case.
A Special Investigation Team had been constituted consisting of Inspector Gurcharan Singh, Incharge CIA Staff, Mohali under the supervision of Darshan Singh Mann, Superintendent of Police, Headquarters, SAS Nagar and Dera Bassi Superintendent of Police Anil Sharma.
During the investigation by the special team, accused Rakesh Mehta (40), Jang Bahadur (19), a resident of ward No 9, Derabassi and a first year student of Mechanical Engineering in Longowal Engineering College, Sandeep (19), a resident of Preet Nagar, Derabassi who is a security guard in Metro Mall and an acquaintances of theirs of village Devinagar have been arrested.
Police officials state that investigation shows that the six other people who had been booked were not involved in the case.
During the preliminary interrogation, the arrested persons disclosed that the deceased, Rajesh Kumar Bittu, had filed many civil suits and criminal cases against Rakesh Mehta.
The three others accused also said that they had planned to murder Bittu on January 15. When they did not get a chance, in rage they damaged his car which was parked near the Court Complex, Dera Bassi.
The accused were well aware of the fact that Bittu used to go to his brother's shop everyday.
On February 14, the accused found Rajesh Kumar Bittu alone while walking towards his home from his brother's shop at around 10 pm, and hit him with bricks and a baseball bat and thus killed him.
