Didi allots land to Dada

The Trinamool Congress government, which was once critical of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly for his "proximity" to the Marxists, on Tuesday allotted 2 acres of land to him at Rajarhat for setting up an educational institution. The state cabinet cleared the proposal in today's meeting.

It was during the Left Front rule that Ganguly was allotted 2 cottahs of land at CA block in Salt Lake. However, the residents of the area led by local CPM leaders took to the streets protesting against setting up a school in their locality as they thought it would create chaos in the area. The matter was even dragged to the High Court and Ganguly ultimately lost the case.

Ganguly was considered close to former Left Front minister Ashok Bhattacharya and took part in several programmes in Siliguri ó Bhattacharya's home town.

Partha Chatterjee, now minister for Commerce and Industries, at that time commented that he had great respect for Ganguly as a cricketer but it was "unfortunate that he was close to the CPM".
