DMRC to build subway without disrupting traffic
The subway will be built using an innovative technology to avoid hampering the construction of a flyover.
It will connect the Dabri Mor Metro station on the upcoming Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden corridor. The subway will come up just before the Dabri Mor circle on the left side of Pankha Road towards Sagarpur.
The entry to Dabri Mor station will be from both sides of Pankha Road. The station will be constructed adjacent to the Janakpuri C2D area on DDA land. The subway will connect the station with localities such as Sitapuri, Dabri Mor police station and Sagarpur on the other side of Pankha Road.
Officials said the subway will be built under the flyover — at a depth of 9.77m from road-level. "The construction will be an architectural landmark. An innovative technology known as 'box pushing' will be used. In the box-pushing method, vertical excavation or large-scale digging is not required," a DMRC spokesperson said.
The Metro tunnel will also come up below the subway at a depth of 17.05m. The subway will also pass below the drain on Pankha Road. It will be about 75m long, 7m wide and will have a height of about 3.5m.
Further, the use of box-pushing technology will ensure that the traffic isn't disrupted. "The technique uses RCC boxes in segments that are cast and then pushed through below the road to create a tunnel. The traffic will not be hampered. Generally, the construction of such subways involves large-scale excavation which leads to problems," the official said.
This subway will be in the unpaid area of the Metro station, and will enable non-Metro commuters to cross the busy Pankha Road. The Dabri Mor Metro station will cater to areas such as Sitapuri, Dabri, Sagarpur, Uttam Nagar and parts of Janakpuri. Around 20,000 commuters are expected to use this line once it is commissioned in 2016.
The tenders for the station have been received and are being evaluated. This station has been built in a slightly curved manner to avoid any demolition of private or public properties.
