Drivers fight rickshaw ban in schools

Members of the Rickshaw Panchayat on Monday held a protest meet against the state government decision to bring a phasewise ban on autorickshaws ferrying schoolchildren. At the meet, Baba Adhav, president of Rickshaw Panchayat, announced statewide agitations if the state government did not give permission to ferry 10 schoolchildren at a time.

At the agitation, held outside the collectorate, Rickshaw Panchayat members condemned the government decision by tying black ribbons on their sleeves.

Adhav said, "The government has taken a decision against the autorickshaw drivers with the intention of supporting the bus lobby. We will not let this happen as the autorickshaw drivers will become jobless at one stroke. The government is citing security of children as the reason. In the last 35 years, not a single serious accident involving school rickshaws has taken place."
