Drugs found in Tihar, 2 wardens under scanner

The role of two Tihar Jail wardens is under scrutiny after an inmate was caught recently with contraband such as "smack" and "charas" that he said he got from a fellow prisoner.

Police sources said guards caught the prisoner with the contraband on October 20 when he was entering the high-security ward after his morning walk. "A thorough frisking revealed that he was carrying around 100 grams of smack and charas in a polythene bag hidden inside his undergarment," an officer said.

Sources said the prisoner was never taken out of jail, indicating that "insiders who have access to the outside world" were involved in the crime. "Usually prisoners get caught while trying to smuggle contraband into the prison. This case looks different. The role of two wardens is being verified," a police officer said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (West) V Renganathan said: "We have registered a case at the Hari Nagar police station. As for the source of the contraband, investigation is on."
