Drunken driving: 11 told to stand ‘till rising of the court’

In order to punish those who are issued challans for driving in an inebriated condition, Chief Judicial Magistrate Rajnish Kumar Sharma on Thursday sentenced 11 people to stand "till rising of the court".

Those held guilty and made to stand included not only the residents of Chandigarh but also people from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Licences of all these people were impounded by the Chandigarh Police and sent to the courts after they were challaned for drunken driving.

The accused are Gurpreet Singh, Nirmaljeet Singh, Gurcharan Singh, Desh Raj Singh, Piara Singh, Parshamtam Kumar, Rakesh Kumar, Jatinder Katyal, Pankaj Sharma, Harkamal Sharma and Siddharth Sharma. The accused were made to stand till 4.30 pm.

Earlier this year, on the first day of the District Courts in the year 2013, 16 people were sentenced to stand "till rising of the court".
