Elephant deaths: House panel to suggest remedy in a month

Registering its concern over the rising elephant deaths on rail tracks, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways Thursday sought to know the reasons for such accidents and formed a committee to suggest remedial steps within a month. The committee will comprise senior officials of the Railways, Ministry of Environment and Forests and officials of the state governments concerned.

The standing committee felt the Railways could consider new measures like darting microchips into elephants, using satellite imaging to monitor their movements and reducing train speed in accident-prone areas.
