A team of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the UT Police has busted a gang of employees of Berkeley Automobiles Limited, Industrial Area Phase I. Three persons were arrested. They were involved in providing cars to customers who wanted cars to be delivered out of turn by preparing forged documents like fake insurance cover notes and temporary registration numbers.
Explaining the modus operandi adopted by the accused, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) CID, Anil Joshi said, "The accused contacted persons who wanted to buy cars by paying money more than the showroom prices of cars to get the deliveries out of turn. They then prepared all required fake documents including the insurance covers, fake registration papers etc and provided car to them after taking an amount between Rs 50,000 to one lakh in each car delivery case".
The DSP said that the fraud came to light when a person approached the UT Police stating that he is not able to get the registration for his car.
The accused had adopted the strategy of transferring the amounts of the actual customers to the accounts of other customers for fulfilling the required formalities of the company. The Data Management System (online) of the company was used to prepare bills in the names of actual customers who had actually booked the vehicle. The accused then managed to change the name of the applicant to those persons who had allegedly paid the black money in manual billing.
The accused also prepared all the required documents for the alleged black money paid by the customer without his knowledge. But when the customer goes to the registration authority for registering his car, he would came to realise that all the papers were fake and did not stand against his name.
