Employers now look at what students do on social media sites

Along with maintaining good scores and aptitude, students better watch out what they put up on their social networking sites if they want to get recruited to big companies. Major companies are now looking at the data shared on social networking sites too to decide on the selection process, say placement officers.

Rohini Vasant Mulay, chairman of the Federation of Training and Placement (T&P) Officers in Pune and also the T&P officer of Cummins College of Engineering for Women agrees that companies are looking at the social networking sites to understand the attitude of the students.

"Precautions need to be taken by students before sharing or even 'liking' controversial posts. The recruiters also look at the comments by them on others and also the kind of language they use. Very obscene or offensive languages need to be avoided. Recruiters also seem to be wary of the students who seem to have strong political affiliations and like such pages or post such comments on Facebook," said Mulay.

The view was seconded by Sandip Meshram, TPO of College of Engineering College, Pune. "Recruiters are now asking for detailed CVs, which sometimes even include questions of what all web portals the students are on. Hence, the students need to be careful about their behaviour on web. Secondly, recruiters also bend stringent minimum marks eligibility rules when it comes to students with exceptional achievements in extracurricular activities. Hence talent is what the recruiters want now," said Meshram.

A S Kulkarni, head of T& P office at the Vishwakarma Group of Institutes which includes Vishwakarma Institute of Technology and Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology, said that even the group pages and official Facebook pages of the institute is checked by big companies.

"This gives them an idea of what kind of attitude the college has. Nowadays, the HRs of the recruiting companies are also young. Hence they are net savvy and have a better knowledge of what the online profile means," said Kulkarni.
