Experts study parking policy, say 1,200 vehicles added to city roads daily

Delhi has witnessed an annual vehicular growth of 10 per cent and nearly 1,200 vehicles are registered daily, experts analysing the parking policy of the Capital said on Wednesday.
The statistics were provided by experts to discuss parking reforms for a liveable city, at a conference organised by the Center for Science and Environment to encourage authorities in the Capital towards adopting a parking policy. The policy aims at discouraging usage of private vehicles and encourage use of public transport.
With an exponential growth of private vehicles on Delhi's roads, which had 6.9 million vehicles till May this year, a parking policy is being drafted by Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control).
A group of regulators, experts and civil society representatives from different Indian cities and abroad made several recommendations which included increasing parking rates, integrate parking needs of the public transport buses, non-motorised transport and freight transport in a city and promote efficient parking management strategies.
Geetam Tiwari, associate professor at IIT Delhi pointed out that according to studies conducted by them, even marginal increases in parking prices may not make a difference.
"According to a survey, we did in Nehru Place, people said only a charge of Rs 200 a day or more for parking would discourage them from taking out their personal vehicles, said Dr E Madhu from CRRI.
"In Delhi, there is often no adequate parking space for buses in the depots around the city. And around bus stations and Metro stations there is no space for autos, taxis and cycle-rickshaws to park creating a chaotic situation," said S N Sahai, managing director, Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited.
According to CSE's executive director research and advocacy, Anumita Roychaudhary, the city needs to come up with a new strategy that can control the chaotic traffic situation as well as reduce the demand for parking and car usage.
