Express photographer among 12 to get journalism award

The Press Council of India (PCI) marked the National Press Day on Friday and awarded 12 persons with the National Awards for Excellence in Journalism. Former Chief Justice of India M N Venkatachaliah was the chief guest at the event while Union I&B Minister Manish Tewari and German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner were the Guests of Honour.

Though no entry could qualify for the top honour — Raja Ram Mohan Roy award — Rajesh Parshuram Joshte of Lokmat, Ratnagiri, bagged the 'Stree Shakti' award for reporting on women's issues.

The Indian Express photographer Partha Paul, The Times of India's Lattur Shankar and Asian Age's Biplab Banerjee were given awards for excellence in photo-journalism. India Today's Damyanti Dutta and Tehelka's Priyanka Dubey were were awarded with 'Certificate of Excellence for Investigative Journalism'. A special certificate for excellence in Urdu journalism was awarded to Hasan Kamaal while R Sambhan of Thiruvananthapuram-based publication 'Deshabhimani' was chosen for the award in 'Rural Journalism'.

Lauding PCI's efforts in rendering invaluable service to journalism for 46 years, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said censorship was no answer to irresponsible journalism and favoured self-regulation.
