Firm booked for cheating parents of students in US

The Pune police on Wednesday registered a case of cheating against a Chandigarh-based travel agency and its agents who allegedly duped the parents of several students studying in the Unites States by making false promises to provide cheap air tickets for travelling to India during Christmas vacation.

The case was registered at the Kothrud police station and is being investigated by the economic offences wing (EOW) of Pune city police. Police suspect that scam runs into a few crores of rupees. On Monday, parents of three Pune-based students submitted their complaint to Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol.

Police said parents of several students studying in the US, from different parts of country, including Pune, reportedly paid thousands of rupees in the bank account of the Chandigarh-based travel agency.

The agency allegedly promised air tickets to their wards at cheaper rates for coming to India during Christmas but never provided the tickets.

Prakash Ralesarkar of Pune, whose son Mayur studies in Los Angeles, reportedly paid Rs 65,000 to the agency, but did not get the ticket.

The agency neither refund the money nor respond to phone calls.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Sanjay Shinde said the matter was being probed. Inspector Dilip Naukudkar is heading investigation in the case.
