Five sandalwood thieves arrested

The Wanawdi police on Friday arrested five people for allegedly stealing sandalwood logs from Army quarters on Victoria Road, Vishwakarma Marg and the Forest Research Nursery office near Empress Garden in Ghorpadi on January 22. The suspects have been identified as Kiran Haridas Gaikwad (23), Biru Madhukar Jarag (24), Sanjay Kalidas Pakhare (20), all from Mohol in Solapur district, Navnath Kshirsagar (19) of Hingoli and Atul Manik Jadhav (25) of Sangli. Police produced the suspects before the Cantonment court on Friday. Judicial magistrate (first class) V V Mugalikar remanded them in police custody till February 3. A search has been launched for four more suspects identified as Tanaji Chopde, Aslam Shaikh, Ganesh Raut and Rohit, all natives of Solapur. The gang had chopped a 4-feet-long sandalwood log of the tree located at Army Quarters and a 3-feet-long sandalwood log from Forest Research Nursery office in the early hours of January 22. They fled with the sandalwood logs worth Rs 20,000 in a four wheeler. "Most of these suspects are history sheeters. They have committed similar crimes before. They conduct recee to identify the sandalwood trees and then plan to cut it during night. Investigations are on to find out whom they supply the stolen sandalwood," said inspector A R Khadke.
