Chill gripped the city on Sunday with heavy fog prevailing right from morning till late evening. The minimum temperature plummeted by 3 degrees from 8.6 degrees on Friday to 5.2 degrees on Sunday. The fog left the railway schedule of the city disturbed, but buses were more or less on time.

However, the visibility in the city was recorded at 1 km, although enough for buses and trains to move smoothly.

Dr K K Gill, assistant agro-meteorologist, Punjab Agricultural University, said, "No doubt we were expecting heavy fog in early morning but it got considerably extended, and it was foggy for the whole day. For the next 48 hours, conditions will be the same. Day temperatures will dip down while early mornings will be extremely chilly and foggy. Clear sun is, however, expected in daytime."

Although both the Shatabdi trains (Shatabdi Express and Swaran Shatabdi) were running on time on Sunday, seven other trains were behind schedule by 1 to 3.5 hours, said assistant Harprashad, assistant station superintendent.

Howrah Mail was running late by 2 hours while Duplicate Howrah was late by 3.5 hours. Shane-e-Punjab was late by 2 hours while Paschim Express was late by 1.5 hours and Flying Mail was late by two hours. Sachkhand Express was also late by two hours while Amritsar Super Express was too delayed by 1 hour.

However, Rajeshwar Singh Grewal, manager, bus stand, said, "There is no major effect of fog on buses till now as fog lights are able to manage the timings. In the coming days, with intensification of fog, things can get tougher but till Sunday buses were not delayed by more than half an hour due to slow speed."
