For Rae Bareli ‘AIIMS’, govt to give land for free

Cabinet CM blames delay on Maya politicising project.

The UP Cabinet on Friday decided to provide land free of cost to the Centre for setting up an AIIMS-like medical institute in Congress president Sonia Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli.

"We have decided to provide land free of cost to the central government," said Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav after the cabinet meeting in Lucknow, and added that the project had been pending for long "because the previous government (BSP government under Mayawati) did politics on the project''.

He said his government welcomed the Centre's decision to set up the medical institute in Rae Bareli, but the state needed more such health institutions. "UP is a big state with nearly 20 crore population. There should be more such institutes. Let them set up this first. No injustice should be to done to the state," he added.

The Centre had proposed to set up the institute in 2008, but the then Mayawati government did not allot the land objecting to its location. Now, 148.15 acres of land have been identified — 98.30 acres of Nandganj Sihohi Sugar mill and 49.85 acres of land of farmers of Sultanpur Aima and Dariyapur villages.

The cabinet had authorised the chief minister to take the final decision on the issue.
