Police lock down all roads to India Gate, traffic diversions lead to chaos on roads, Metro service remains curtailed.
A day after violent protests at India Gate, the traffic police blocked the C-Hexagon in Central Delhi, turning area into a fortress. All radials reaching India Gate were barricaded to prevent protesters from reaching Raisina Hill.
The curb on movement had a spiraling affect on all major stretches as the vehicular load shifted to adjoining arterial roads, leading to massive traffic jams. Thousands of commuters were stranded at major intersection. Though the curbs were removed at 9 pm, police said the barricades will be back at 6 am on Tuesday.
The nine Metro stations, which have been closed since Sunday, will remain shut till 9 pm on Tuesday.
Police said of the nine stations Central Secretariat and Rajiv Chowk were opened partially on Monday evening. Patel Chowk, Udyog Bhavan, Race Course, Pragati Maidan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road and Khan Market stations remained inaccessible.
Many ambulances were also stuck in the traffic. The stretch from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhawan, called the Central Vista was closed. Mansingh Road, Janpath, Vijay Chowk, both carriageways of Rafi Marg and Copernicus Marg were also barricaded.
The shutdown of C-Hexagon was imposed around 6 am on Monday. The major stretches affected were Shanti Path to Teen Murti, Willington Crescent, Chanakyapuri, ITO, Sardar Patel Marg, Subramanian Bharati Marg, Lodhi Road, Ashram, Mandi House, Windsor Place, Rail Bhawan, Rajindera Place, Dhaula Kuan and Ring Road.
Special arrangements for the movement of Russian President Vladmir Putin added to the chaos as Sardar Patel Marg was shut. It was also found that the meeting of the Russian President, earlier scheduled at Hyderabad House near India Gate, was shifted to the residence of the PM on Race Course Road keeping in mind the violent protest the previous day.
