Proceedings will be in camera; police arrest owner of bus

The police are likely to submit a chargesheet on Thursday against five men arrested for the gangrape and torture of a 23-year-old woman on board a bus in South Delhi on December 16. The woman died in a Singapore hospital on December 29 and police said the men would be charged with murder.

Sources in the police said the chargesheet would be submitted to the court in a sealed cover and a CD would also be handed over. Proceedings at the Saket court would be in camera. To protect the identity of the rape victim, no mediaperson will be allowed inside the court.

The five accused Ram Singh, Mukesh, Vinay, Pawan and Akshay have been chargesheeted by police for offences including murder, rape, dacoity, abduction and criminal conspiracy. A supplementary chargesheet will be filed against the sixth accused if an ossification test proves he is not a juvenile.

In the chargesheet, police have cited over 30 witnesses including two bus cleaners who claimed to have seen Ram Singh washing the bus to remove blood stains. The woman and her male friend, who was also badly beaten, were dumped by the roadside in Mahipalpur, an hour after they boarded the bus in Munirka.

Her friend pulled her away when he saw the bus reversing to run her over, the sources said, adding that Mukesh was at the wheel.

It is learnt that the juvenile among the six was the first to taunt her friend, asking him where he was headed so late at night with a woman. He attacked her friend and the others joined in, kicking and hitting him with a rod.

To save himself from the blows, the friend crawled under the seats. The five accused got together and dragged him out. To save her friend, the woman fought back and bit three accused, the sources said. The bite marks are mentioned in the medico-legal case report. Hit with a rod, her friend became unconscious and the men moved towards the woman, the sources said.
