Assembly polls verdict: Under Raje's leadership BJP heads for landslide victory in Rajasthan
The Bharatiya Janata Party under the leadership of Vasundhara Raje is inching towards a thumping victory in Rajasthan leaving Congress way behind in the race.
By 3.30 pm, the BJP secured 132 seats while the Congress managed to grab only 17 and others took seven. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who won from Sardarpura, will tender resignation to Governor Margaret Alva at 7pm today.
BJP's chief ministerial candidate Vasundhara Raje won from Jhalrapatan by a margin of 60896 votes.
As per the trends, BJP was leading on 36 seats while Congress was ahead on 06.
Meanwhile, Kin of tainted ministers, Amri Devi, Leela Maderna, Hazarilal Nagar also lost the elections.
Kirodi Lal Meena of National People's Party won in Lalsot by a paltry margin of 500 votes
Congress' populist schemes seem to have been brushed aside by the electorate in Rajasthan. Three ministers of outgoing Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's cabinet – Tourism Minister Bina Kak, Revenue Minister Hemaram Choudhary and UDH Minister Shanti Dhariwal – were defeated in their own constituencies.
The much-touted Barmer oil refinery did not work for the party as well and right in the constituency where it was brought in, Pachpadra, Congress was defeated by Amra Ram of BJP. The party dominated in all of Barmer district with Manvendra Singh, Amra Ram, Laduram Bishnoi, all defeating the Congress candidates while the other BJP candidates maintain their lead.
BJP former state president Arun Chaturvedi won from Civil Lines defeating sitting MLA Pratap Singh Khachariawas. In Kaman where the minority community was said to have held a grudge against the Congress following the Gopalgarh riots of 2011, Jagat Singh of BJP, son of former minister Natwar Singh defeated Zahida Khan, who was named in the CBI chargesheet in the case.
