Asian Games gold medallist Pinki Pramanik was charged with rape and cheating by police on Friday after the gender determination test report concluded that the 26-year-old athlete is "male".
"The medical report said Pinki is a male and the charges against the athlete have been established," Additional Public Prosecutor Shantamay Basu told the media after submitting the medical report prepared by the SSKM Hospital to a court in Barasat. Basu added the report also confirms allegation of physical assault against Pinki.
Pinki was arrested on June 14 this year after being accused of rape and torture by former live-in partner, Anamika Acharya. The arrest triggered a huge controversy. A month later, Pinki was released on bail as gender determination tests conducted by a private nursing home at Barasat as well as at Barasat General Hospital remained inconclusive.
Pinki also rejoined work as TTE for the Eastern Railway after the suspension was revoked.
In the chargesheet filed by police today, Pinki has been charged under Sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 420 (cheating), 417, 325 (grievous hurt) and 493 (bigamy) of the Indian Penal Code.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the former middle-distance runner, who won the 4x400 metres relay gold at 2006 Doha Asian Games, termed it as a "huge conspiracy". "A huge conspiracy has been hatched against me by the police. I am shocked and don't know what to do next. They (investing authorities) are trying to force me to commit suicide," said Pinki.
"After the medical tests, the board concluded that I am not capable of committing rape. I had some symptoms of excess male hormones which is because of the drugs I had taken during my athletics career. I am yet to receive any official notification from the police or court and learned about the latest development from the media. I am sure that the medical reports have been tampered with, and the police put forward their own theory in the chargesheet," the athlete added.
