Girl with learning disability eased out by school, alleges mother

The mother of a 15-year-old girl student with learning disability has moved the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) claiming she could lose her academic year after being misguided by G D Somani School in Cuffe Parade.

The parent claimed she withdrew her daughter from G D Somani School after being told by the school principal that she won't be able to clear Class X exams since she was a slow learner and that she should get the child admitted to another school named "Nalanda".

"I thought it would benefit my daughter and decided to apply for the school leaving certificate, which was issued on August 23. When I went to Nalanda, I was shocked to find it was just a coaching centre. The school refused to re-admit my daughter and advised me to let her appear for the board exam privately."

However, the girl was denied permission to appear for board exams privately since it is meant only for those students who have left school in the month of July.

The school management, however, says the parent was not forced to withdraw her child.

Justifying its position before the commission, the school's vice-principal Sharmishta Basu said, "We only suggested that the girl change the board because she was a slow learner and was not able to cope with ICSE and might fail in the board exams. However, the final decision was left to the parents and they applied for a school leaving certificate on August 22. We never forced her to leave."

The parents now want the school to change the date on the leaving certificate from August to July so that the girl can appear for her board exam as a private candidate, but the school has refused to do so.A representative from Nalanda who was summoned by the CRC said they never claimed they were a school.
