Girls get a raw deal in campus placements in technical colleges

The campus placement for girls in technical institutes seems to be in very dismal state.

The reasons for feeble campus recruitment of girls include companies not considering them for certain job profiles to girls not willing to relocate to new places or refusing to work in late evening hours as also social and parental pressures of giving preference to marriage over career, according to faculties associated with placement cells in their respective institutes.

Faculties in several colleges say though girls were equally or sometimes more brilliant than boys, they were not coming forward to appear at the campus interviews because of various reasons and hence, losing the immediate chance of job prospect.

Out of 330 eligible candidates in the all-women Sabar Institute of Technology for Girls (SITG) in Sabarkantha district, hardly 150 of them want placement.

SITG director Pravesh Bhadviya says the rest have refused to take up job and are not serious at all about placement. "But hardly 25 to 30 candidates are willing to relocate to new places, thus limiting the job opportunities for them," said Bhadviya.

Stating that the girls had also refused to attend the free of charge placement training, he said the parents themselves intervened asking the authorities to avoid job interviews for their daughters, saying their first priority was marriage than taking up employment. "We don't want jobs for our daughters," many of the parents reportedly told Bhadviya.

"While 30 per cent of the girl students were engaged for marriage, another 25 to 30 per cent were about to get married during this month," Bhadviya said, quoting parents. Parents reportedly told him that their daughters would decide about job after their marriage and in consultation with their husband and in-laws.

He said four girls had been selected by a multinational eClinicalWorks but they refused to take up the job because of the late evening working hours.
