Chain snatchers are getting more brazen by the day, striking with impunity and alarming frequency. In the latest case, 41-year-old Sunita Landge had a narrow escape after two desperadoes on a motorcycle followed the bike on which she was returning home with her husband from a wedding and tried to snatch her necklace.

Although they did not succeed as she clutched at the necklace and refused to let go, during the scuffle their bike wobbled, skidded on the road and toppled, and she was dragged on the ground for a few metres resulting in injuries to both hands, and the abdomen. Her husband escaped with minor injuries.

The spot on the Pune-Nashik Road in Bhosari where the incident took place around 8pm Wednesday, is less than a km from Bhosari police station and about two km from Kasarwadi police chowky on the same road.

Sunita, a mother of two, and her husband were returning to their residence in Kasarwadi after the function on Bhosari-Alandi Road.

The chain snatchers, faces covered, apparently started following them somewhere near the marriage pandal. "I did not realise it until they came close. One of them put his hand on my neck and tried to snatch my necklace and a chain. I quickly put my hand on the jewellery and clutched at it. I screamed and my husband also shouted. The man panicked and loosened his grip. The jewellery broke and fell to the ground," says Sunita.

The motorcycle skidded and Sunita and her husband fell on the road. Sunita was dragged for a few metres. She suffered injuries to both her hands and stomach. Her husband escaped with bruises. "The skin on both my hands peeled off badly. Since the incident, I have not been able to do household chores... Luckily, I did not fall on my head. Otherwise, I don't think I would have survived because the attack was sudden, and it shocked me," says Sunita. "Before I could gather myself, the desperadoes had sped away," says Hanumant Landge.
