Gorakhpur may need two effluent-treatment plants: Expert

For saving the environment of Gorakhpur, especially the Ami river, from industrial pollution, not just one but at least two effluent-treatment plants may be required to be set up in the industrial sector of the district, according to an environment expert who was given the task of completing a feasibility study for a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) to be established under Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA).

Because of the delay in establishment of the CETP, partially treated or untreated effluent from industries under GIDA is discharged directly in the Ami river, a tributary of Rapti river.

The state government in the year 2010 had decided to establish a common effluent-treatment plant in Gorakhpur. In 2011, GIDA asked Dr Govind Pandey of Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College, Gorakhpur, to submit a feasibility report on whether an effluent-treatment plant was necessary.

Around a year-and-a-half later, Dr Pandey has completed his field visit to the industrial area of the district and is still awaiting data from some industries and the regional centre of state's pollution control board. "But I will submit the report by January second week even if I do not get these data," Pandey told The Indian Express over the phone.

An effluent-treatment plant had to be set up before the establishment of industries under GIDA, which did not happen, said Pandey. The evidence collected by him on his field visits conducted last month suggest that there is a definite requirement of such a plant in the area, he said.

"But given the environment condition, one treatment plant may not be the answer to the pollution here. If I get the data from the PCB and GIDA, I will be in a better position to recommend whether one effluent treatment plant is enough or at least two will have to be set up," Pandey said.
