Govt schools with 20 students being closed, says Maluka

Punjab Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka on Thursday said the government schools "having 20 or less students" were in the process of closure in the state.

"All the government schools having 20 or less students are in the process of closure in Punjab. The students will be accommodated in the nearby schools," said Maluka, who is also the president of the Punjab Kabaddi Association. He was in the city to inspect the arrangements for the Kabaddi World Cup closing ceremony on December 15 at Guru Nanak Dev Stadium.

Sources in the district education office said the step was aimed at resolving the problem of shortage of teachers.

In another announcement, Maluka said, "It will now be mandatory for all the schools, both government and private, to hold sports meets in their schools."

On the recent cases of insects and other irregularities found in midday meals of schools, he said, "All district education officers have been directed to test the meals prepared in all the schools and hold meetings at block level. Any irregularity found in midday meals from now onwards will invite strict action."
