Haqqanis amicable with US during soviet era: papers show

Washington: The Haqqani network, that was last week designated by the US as a foreign terror organisation, had a very amicable relationship with US officials during the Soviet war, that later soured, declassified documents revealed. National Security Archive, which released relevant classified documents late Monday, said these include a confession from the network founder Jalaluddin Haqqani that he had enjoyed very amicable relations with US officials during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, but that the friendship soured after the 1998 US bombing of a Haqqani-linked terrorist camp in Khost.

Taliban raked in $400 million from diverse sources: UN

united nations: The Taliban raised about $400 million last year from sources that included donations, taxing local economies and extorting money from such targets as drug dealers, cell phone operators and aid projects, according to a UN report on the militant Islamist group released Tuesday.

The report to the UN Security Council by the sanctions monitoring team said that about $275 million of that income reached Taliban leadership and the rest was collected, spent or misappropriated at the local level. Donations were a major source of funding. The estimate covers the year ended March 20, 2012.

Zawahri confirms June death of qaeda No. 2 al-Libi

CAIRO: The leader of al-Qaeda confirmed the death of the group's second-in-command, who was killed in a US drone strike in northwestern Pakistan in June. In a video posted late Monday on militant websites, al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahri described his late lieutenant Abu Yahya al-Libi as a "lion of jihad and knowledge.'' The killing of al-Libi, who was Libyan by birth, was the biggest setback to al-Qaeda since the death of Osama bin Laden. Al-Zawahri also urged Libyans, al-Libi was born in the north African country, to attack Americans to avenge the late militant's death.
