Hazare warns of another Ramlila stir

Anna Hazare

Anna Hazare on Friday accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of having cheated him and the country on the Lokpal Bill. He also threatened to sit at Ramlila Maidan before the next elections if his demands are not met. "If there is a need be I will sit at Ramlila Maidan when the general elections get declared," he said while not ruling out the possibility of going on a fast again.

While there was little new in Hazare's accusations, the social activist's views seemed to be in contradiction to what close aide Kiran Bedi has expressed since the Cabinet passed the Lokpal Bill on Thursday. Bedi had hailed the Bill as a beginning that needs more work but "better than nothing". When Hazare was asked about the differences in their views, he said: "Maybe she is not aware of the latest developments."

Bedi had tweeted: "From nothing to something to more as we move on.... Unless we want to stay at nothing. It will do us no harm if we begin with proposed Lokpal and keep improving it as we go along."
