Hinting at ‘lapses’ in FIR, Mamata says more arrests could follow

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today hinted at more arrests in the murder case of Kolkata Police assistant sub-inspector Tapas Choudhury at the hands of goons reportedly owing allegiance to Trinamool Congress leader Mohammad Iqbal Ahmed.

The murder took place on February 12 during a clash at Harimohan Ghosh College at Garden Reach in south Kolkata during filing of nomination papers in the elections of the college union. So far 13 people have been arrested.

Mamata made the announcement after her visit to the house of the slain officer in Behala in the afternoon.

"There were some other people whose names should have been mentioned in the FIR and we will check why that did not happen. Law will take its own course," the chief minister told reporters outside the house.

Asked why Iqbal was not arrested, Mamata retorted: "Ask the CPM. I have not come here to answer questions of ABP or 24 Ghanta."

She began by announcing a series of relief measures for Choudhury's family. "The official's tenure of office was supposed to end in 2017, and till that date his wife will continue to receive the same salary and other benefits accruing to it. And for that she will not have to go to office," Mamata said.

Incidentally, the Left Front government too meted out the same relief —- the salary of a slain policeman to the wife till the tenure ended — to those who were killed by Maoists at Junglemahal.

Mamata also said that while the daughter, Tanushri, would get a clerical job in the police department, the state government would bear all expenses for the studies of the son Tamal, a student of class IX.

Regarding one-time compensation, the chief minister said that while the family will get insurance benefits to the tune of Rs 15 lakh, the state government would allot another Rs 5 lakh. In addition the government will sanction Rs 5 lakh, making the total amount Rs 25 lakh.
