Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung has been named the new Lt Governor of Delhi, replacing Tejendra Khanna.
Hours after the announcement by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, Jung told Newsline: "I thank God for this rare and special opportunity to serve the people of this great city to which I belong, and where my family has lived since 1842. What an honour."
Jung becomes the 20th Lt Governor of Delhi, replacing Khanna who took charge in April 2007 for a second stint at the Raj Niwas. Jung has been vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia since September 2009.
During his tenure, Jamia became the first Central university to attain minority status with 50 per cent reservation for Muslim students.
A former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Jung who belonged to the 1973 batch worked for 22 years in different capacities in Madhya Pradesh and at the Centre.
He was managing director of two public sector companies and joint secretary in the Government of India.
Born on January 18, 1951, Jung studied history at St Stephen's College in Delhi University and later went to the London School of Economics.
He has been a senior adviser at the Asian Development Bank. He was also a senior visiting fellow and research scholar at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.
Jung has been director on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India and independent member of the State Security Commission for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
