How brain freeze did Cook in

It was as bizarre as it got. Batting on 190 and looking firmly set for a double ton, Alastair Cook had to depart after being run out in the most freakish manner. Kevin Pietersen played a Zaheer Khan delivery to Virat Kohli at square leg and the fielder threw the ball to the non-striker's end.

Cook was backing up but didn't ground his bat inside the crease. As the ball came towards him he just raised his bat to avoid coming in the way and obstructing the path of the ball. The stumps were shattered and Cook was out of the crease. Third umpire V Kulkarni on referral declared that the England captain was out. Cook was out of his crease but would not have been out had the ball hit his bat while he tried to regain his ground.

As per law, the on field umpires Rod Tucker, who was at the bowling end, and Kumara Dharmasena had to decide if the England captain was taking any evasive action. They decided that he wasn't and the matter was referred to the third umpire.
