The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education has decided to give the facility of open school education to those who dropped out or want to study while working.
The open school facility will be started from this academic session on experimental basis for students of Class X. From next year, the facility will be extended to Class XI and XII.
The decision was taken in a meeting of the board at Dharamsala on Wednesday.
Talking to The Indian Express over phone from Dharamsala, board Chairman Professor Chaman Lal Gupta said: "The open school is likely to benefit over 10,000 candidates according to our preliminary estimates. Himachal Pradesh has an enrollment of 15,000 candidates annually for education through the National Open School (NOS). Due to the problem of arbitrary fees charged by many centres and flaws in conducting regular examinations, many students coming from interiors of the state felt cheated."
The state's open school will provide education on the pattern of NOS, with credit transfer system. For example, if a student has passed three subjects through regular schooling in Class X and can clear the rest through open school, his credits of the earlier three subjects passed will be added to the new score.
"We have framed a separate syllabus and study material like assignments and workbooks for the open school. The fees of Rs 1,100 per annum is also lower than the NOS and a minimum age bar of 14 years has been set for taking admission in Class X," said Gupta.
One open school centre will be created at the block level in the state, where a school will be identified as the centre where students can come to consult teachers on Sundays and other holidays and also submit their assignments and take examinations.
The teachers appointed as counsellors will get an additional honorarium for helping these students.
