I am not joining SP: Amar Singh

Ending all speculation, former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh today ruled out his return to the party. Singh also denied any communication with the SP leadership regarding his rejoining.

There were media reports that the Akhilesh government was soft on Singh after the Kanpur police on Friday filed a closure report in a case of fraud, cheating and embezzlement against him, his wife Pankaja Kumari, actor Amitabh Bachchan and Ashok Chaturvedi. The case was filed during the previous BSP regime. The development was speculated as a step by the SP leadership to bury the hatchet with Amar Singh, who had been Mulayam's trusted aide for 14 years before being expelled in 2010.

"I am aware of media reports about my rejoining the SP. They are baseless and do not carry any truth," Singh told The Indian Express today. "I want to clear all doubts that there is no official or unofficial communication with SP in this regard. I am not joining SP," he added.

People close to Singh have confided that there is possibility of his returning to SP without expulsion of Cabinet Minister Azam Khan and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan. "The flash point in Singh's episode was during Rampur Lok Sabha election when Khan opposed Jaya Prada. Later, Jaya Bachchan further added fuel to it. Any talks can be held only after these two leave SP," they said.

Singh did not consider the action by Kanpur police as any favour to him. "I have not committed any fraud and so no question of any favour. I will not comment much as the matter is subjudice and my lawyer will explain things before the court," Singh added.

He also stated that he has already been given clean chit during investigation by Serious Fraud Investigation Organisation and SEBI. "Our companies have been merged in accordance with law and the Kolkata High Court for Merger has confirmed it. There is no anomaly in it. Even during police investigation nothing was found in Kanpur and thus they filed a closure report," Amar Singh remarked.
