'I follow my own path

Aamir, would you say that Talaash has lived up to your expectations in terms of box office collections and the way people have reacted to the film?

n So far it has been going well but I am always conservative in my estimate. The film has generated

` 48.99 crore plus in India, which is almost ` 7 crore more than 3 Idiots. We did not release the film on Eid or Diwali, and our promos suggest a serious film so I am extremely happy with the reactions. So far, so good. But we should wait till Monday /Tuesday collections to see if the film holds. Overseas collections have been good too. In US, it is the highest weekend collections, even more than films that get long weekend post release. We have even sold the satellite rights of the film for ` 40 crore.

What is the best thing you have heard about the film so far from those that have watched it?

n That they want to watch it again. They are finding the film very layered and emotionally moving. It is exactly what I had liked about the story

In times when cops in our movies have been given a flamboyant flourish — Chulbul Pandey style, your character stands out for its restraint, so could you elaborate on your approach (to the character).

n I don't go by trends and norms. I go by my internal feeling. I go with my heart. For this film too, I approached it my way.

What sort of pressure does the '` 100 crore benchmark' put on actor or even a producer?

n Actually, hundred crore was the benchmark five years ago. Today, ` 100 crore is less for a film with a top ranking actor. An 'A' grade film with a print release of more than 2500 should do far more business than ` 100 crore.
