In a first, this year's summer placements process for IIM-Ahmedabad's first-year PGP students completed ahead of schedule on Saturday with "more than 130 firms" participating in three clusters that began visiting the campus 10 days ago, a press release from the institute said on Saturday.
Besides hinting at a strong will to recruit (albeit for internships) among participating firms, the early completion also means companies that were scheduled to visit the campus as part of a fourth cluster this coming Monday will have to cancel their trips since there are no more students to recruit.
Amith J M, a member of the Student Placement Committee, said the process completed early because students could take up internships of their choice in the firms that participated in the first three clusters.
The committee was unwilling to disclose at this time the names or number of firms that were slotted for cluster four or whether all 383 students from the current batch took part in the placement process.
Meanwhile, second-year PGP students said the quick recruitment of first-year students (their juniors) for summer internships is "encouraging" for upcoming final placements for their batch. They pointed out summer placements had completed ahead of time in other IIMs as well.
Reports say 366 students from IIM Kozhikode were recruited within 25 days, IIM Calcutta reportedly placed 466 students in four days while IIM Lucknow is reported to have seen 453 students being picked up in five days.
At IIMA's third cluster, which began recruitment processes Thursday, were a "significant number of e-commerce firms".
Students recruited during the just-concluded process will intern with the respective companies for about two months during the summer vacations in 2013.
Financial sector firms that recruited students during the third cluster include Axis Bank and HDFC. The World Bank also recruited interns for its Financial Instruments division.
