In a first, city’s forensic lab to develop tech to solve voice chat-enabled crime

The Central Forensic and Scientific Laboratory, Chandigarh, is set to become the country's first laboratory to put in place a mechanism to solve crimes pertaining to voice chats on social networking sites, Skype, Vieber and such.
Officials said the number of crimes taking place through internet-telephony or Voice Over Internet Protocol, voice chats are on the rise, but so far, no mechanism was available in India to solve these cases.
The CFSL thus has undertaken a pilot project to unravel the mystery of crimes done through internet-telephony. Officials say that the research is already on and within a year, the laboratory will be able to establish itself fully in this field.
The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned the funds for the required machinery in the ongoing 12th five year plan.
Speaking to Chandigarh Newsline, Dr S K Shukla, director, CFSL, Chandigarh said, "We have undertaken this pilot project and are in the process of establishing it in its full-fledged form within this year. There are many crimes and illegal activities taking place all around us using internet-telephony but as of now there is no established mechanism for experts to solve these cases. We are hopeful of bridging this gap soon". He was at the PGIMER, participating in the National Symposium of Technological Advancements in Forensic Applications organised by the Department of Forensic Medicine, PGIMER and CFSL, Chandigarh.
Many cases are being reported wherein someone gets a call through the internet and social networking sites, asking for depositing money. Besides these, there are cases of fraudulent calls, but there is no mechanism to identify the voices which are computerised. But with the new technology, the same would be possible, he added.
Another expert from CFSL said that still more study needs to be done in the field of internet telephony to cope up with the challenges to be posed by the perpetrator of crime in coming days. Speaker Identification in speech samples recorded through VOIP is more complicated and problematic for the enforcement agencies as the data transferred is highly encrypted and the voice samples have echo, jitter or delay problems.
