Infant killed, 16 injured in expressway pile-up

Twenty vehicles were involved in three separate pile-ups on the Yamuna Expressway on Friday morning. A three-year-old girl, Suhana, was killed in one of the accidents.

Sixteen others were injured — three of them critically. Police said all accidents took place between 8 am and 9.30 am, when a thick fog descended on the expressway.

A senior police officer said the first accident took place 13 km away from zero point on the carriageway which connects Agra to Delhi. "The family was driving towards Mathura in their Maruti 800, when the driver lost control and hit the divider. The car overturned. Suhana was killed on the spot, while her uncles Kop Singh (40) and Bhim Singh (41) are in the ICU at Kailash Hospital," he said. The family resides in Budh Vihar in Delhi, the officer said.

Police said around 15 vehicles were involved in the second accident that took place around the same time, 24 km away from zero point. An officer said, "Due to low visibility, a truck rammed into a mini-van from behind. On impact, the mini-van overturned, crossed the divider, and landed on the opposite carriageway. A canter coming from the other side, which was carrying glass, collided with the mini-van. Other vehicles crashed into the stationary vehicles or hit the glass panels on the road and lost control," the officer said. Thirteen were injured in this pile-up. Pawan Kumar (24) is in a critical condition. While six others were recuperating in wards at Kailash Hospital, the rest were discharged as they had suffered minor injuries.

The third accident, in Aligarh district, took place 64 km away from the zero point.

"Two trucks collided, and two other cars rammed them from behind after the trucks stalled on the middle of the road," an officer said.
