Infighting in wrestling federation over accounts

A simple accounting query has now seen the treasurer of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its executive body members, including the president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and secretary general, Raj Singh, pitted against each other. WFI treasurer, Prem Nath, an Arjuna awardee, had been raising objections about the federation's decision of paying GS Mander Rupees 30,000 per month on account of transport, out of pocket and telephone expenses from May 2011.

Mander, a former WFI president, was retained by the new executive led by Brij Bhushan in an advisory role and has also been made the chairman of the Indian Wrestling League, scheduled to start from November 6, 2013. Irked by Nath's objections — he refused to sign cheque No 404146, dated 02-07-2012 drawn in Mander's favour — the WFI went ahead and amended its constitution during its general council meeting which was held in Gonda on October 10, 2012.

Book keeping, WFI style

The amendment means signatures of only two of the signatories — president and secretary general — is now enough to operate the bank accounts. As per the existing clauses, it was the role of the treasurer to ensure that all bills were to be attested by the senior vice president / secretary general before making any payment. In addition the signature of the treasurer was compulsory to operate the accounts.

When the proposal to amend the constitution was sent by Raj Singh ahead of the October meeting it was met with resistance from Nath. The amendment sought to give additional powers to the WFI president "to sanction appointments, promotions and dismissal of the staff and to appoint chairman/advisor/CEO and to sanction their remuneration. It also changed the number of signatories required to operate "the WFI bank accounts to any two of following office bearers: president and secretary."
