Itís business as usual for wife

On Friday, State Minister for Revenue and Urban Development Anandiben Patel was busy holding meetings with top secretaries from various departments at her office in Swarnim Sankul-I in the secretariat in Gandhinagar. Spokespersons Saurabh Patel and Nitin Patel were seen around her office.

Sources said that the government's agenda have now changed to rethink policies to counter the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP's governing model, which has become the talk of the town for the whole country, posing serious challenges to Modi's popularity. Mafatbhai's 73-year-old wife is being seen as a possible successor to Modi in Gujarat, in case he becomes prime minister.

However, Anandi has chosen not to react to her husband's move. This is not for the first time that her husband has chosen to be her political opposition. In the run up to 2007 Assembly elections, when BJP rebels joined hands with Congress to Sardar Patel Khedut Utkarsh Samiti, they had roped in Mafatbhai to address the rallies. And he publicly criticised Modi.

Anandi is born in a Leuva Patel family in Kharod of Mehsana district, which is 30 km from Modi's native place Vadnagar in the same district. And she married Maftalal, a Kadva Patel. That makes her acceptable in both sub-castes, though her influence is more seen on the Kadvas. The party has made her in-charge of important areas like Ahmedabad and Surat.
